Dear Friend, Why is the chair of the U.S. Postal Service’s Board of Governors, Ron Bloom, defending Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s ten-year plan to destroy the post office?1 Maybe it’s because of the $305,000 in bonds DeJoy bought from Bloom’s private equity firm this year, while Bloom is overseeing DeJoy’s performance.2 DeJoy’s contempt for ethics knows no bounds, and apparently, neither does Bloom’s. Fortunately, Bloom is on a one-year extension as chair of the board, and President Joe Biden could replace him at will with someone willing to rein in DeJoy and his attempt to stop the mail.3 Demand Progress is calling out Ron Bloom’s corruption and pressuring Biden to replace Bloom immediately, as part of our work to fill key positions with progressives who will work in the public interest. This is one of our best options for getting rid of Louis DeJoy and putting the post office back on track. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: DeJoy’s 10-year plan is to sharply raise prices while simultaneously slowing mail delivery, making it both less competitive and less useful to the American people.4 It’s not exactly a winning business plan—and that’s exactly the point. DeJoy is heavily invested in USPS competitors and was appointed by Donald Trump specifically to slow down the mail.5 The USPS is one of the oldest services the country provides, and ending it would be a huge blow to people in rural and impoverished areas who depend on it. The USPS Board of Governors has the ability to rein DeJoy in, and even fire him. But Trump appointee Ron Bloom has been singing his praises since he became postmaster general.6 Just last spring, he complimented DeJoy’s ruinous 10-year plan as increasing “dependability and affordability”—even though it does the opposite.7 And now we know why—Bloom is growing richer off DeJoy. Demand Progress members have sent nearly 100,000 messages this year urging President Biden to fire Bloom and DeJoy and save the post office. We need your help to keep up the fight. Will you donate to help replace Ron Bloom and fire Louis DeJoy—and staff the U.S. Postal Service and key federal agencies with progressives? Yes, I’ll donate to Demand Progress today.
