My office is a watchdog against anyone who refuses to play by the rules — which is why I filed a lawsuit against a large debt collector in Washington regarding a deceptive tactic to collect on old, "zombie" debt, including student loan debt.
As a result of our enforcement action, more than 1,400 Washingtonians deceived by this debt collector will receive checks from my office totaling the amount they paid plus interest.
In total, this settlement will return nearly $710,000 to Washingtonians misled by this unlawful conduct.
No one is above the law — and that includes debt collectors.
This week’s resolution is a win for Washingtonians and a signal to powerful special interests that they will be held responsible for unlawful conduct — especially when it harms Washingtonians.
