BABY POWDER ALERT:
Read the Label & Use Cornstarch Powders!
What You Need to Know
Talcum powder, also known as talc-based baby powder, has been has been linked to ovarian cancer. This stems from the talc being contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen, during the mining process. And manufacturers of baby powders and other adult body and facial powders have turned a blind eye to this for decades.
While some manufacturers have agreed to withdraw their products from the market, there are still plenty of talc-based powders being sold online and in our communities. Be sure to carefully read the label of any powder you buy, or have already purchased. Look for powder that is made from cornstarch, not talc.
Why Is This an Environmental Justice Concern?
Some of these manufacturers aggressively marketed their powders to women of color long after they knew about the contamination and cancer risk. They saw women of color – and Black women in particular – as a lucrative market despite the known health concerns.
What Should You Do?
Carefully read the label of any powder you use. Do not buy or use powder that contains talc or talcum. Choose powders made from cornstarch instead.
