John,
Members of Congress shouldn’t threaten companies for complying with Congressional investigations.
That’s a pretty basic standard.
But last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene did exactly that. They threatened to retaliate against companies that comply with legal requests for documents from the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection.
And those threats aren’t just wrong, they’re also potentially violations of House rules and a law prohibiting the obstruction of Congressional investigations. That’s why we filed an ethics complaint and called for the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate McCarthy and Greene. Read more here.
What’s more, McCarthy’s and Greene’s threats may have been an attempt to prevent damning information about their own actions from becoming public, as it’s been reported that their phone records are included in the select committee’s request. No matter the reason, McCarthy and Green need to be fully investigated, because members of Congress attempting to obstruct the investigation into a deadly attack on the Capitol is frankly appalling. They must be held accountable.
Thank you,
