I wanted to reach out today and give an update on where we stand in Congress on passing two cornerstones of our economic agenda — the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the budget reconciliation package.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill has already passed the Senate and is on track for a House vote by the end of this month. This is a good start when it comes to making critical investments in our nation’s crumbling physical infrastructure.

Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, when the road in your neighborhood is fixed, your kids are safer. The infrastructure package is an urgent investment in good-paying jobs and much needed improvements to our bridges, roads, broadband and water infrastructure in Vermont and across the country.

Meanwhile, the House and Senate have approved a framework for the larger budget package, but the critical details of the final bill are still being written.

Here’s the bottom line — this bill will include:

- A generational investment in combating climate change.
- Securing voting rights for all.
- Guaranteeing paid family and medical leave.
- Major investments in housing.
- Expansion of Medicare and provisions to allow negotiation of lower drug prices.

These are just the highlights. This budget bill is the most meaningful investment in the American people since the New Deal. This is a huge victory for workers, parents, and all Americans.

I’m here to tell you today: For the future of our country and of our planet, we need BOTH the infrastructure AND budget bills.

Large corporations like the fossil fuel giants and Big Pharma are working tirelessly to gut the reconciliation bill and keep it from addressing the urgent structural crises we face.

We cannot allow that to happen. That’s why I’m asking for your support today:

Tell my colleagues in Congress: We must pass BOTH the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the larger reconciliation package. We simply cannot afford to think small or settle for half-measures here.

We have a tough road ahead of us to make sure that both of these bills get through the House and Senate to deliver the kind of change they promise. But I am confident that by standing together we can make the biggest investment in the middle class in our lifetime.
