What’s happening in Texas is bad for our democracy and bodes ill for the future.

The sweeping voting restrictions bill signed into state law yesterday by Texas Governor Greg Abbott is a central pillar of the GOP scheme to hold on to power in a rapidly changing state increasingly populated by people of color, younger voters and others that don’t see their future with the Republican Party.

Senate Bill 1 disproportionately restricts voting access for many of those voters, even while Republicans have the audacity to call their bill an ‘election integrity’ law and a ‘paradigm for other states.’ It also greatly empowers partisan poll watchers and creates new criminal and civil penalties for poll workers who fall afoul of the new rules which include providing assistance to voters who need help, such as with translations.

Just one week earlier Texas also passed a draconian law to effectively end women’s access to abortion in the state — a right protected by the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision — and to empower vigilante citizens to take action against women and anyone seeking to help them exercise their right to choose.

The goal here is crystal clear: to disenfranchise the same groups that suffered so long from lack of access to the ballot box and to strip women of their right to reproductive choice. And we can’t let that happen.

Next week the Senate returns to session, but frankly, we’re out of time to debate about who gets access to their fundamental human and civil rights in America.

I am committed to protecting the freedoms of every American, which is why I will do everything in my power to end the anti-democratic filibuster and pass the For the People Act , the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act , and codify the reproductive rights guaranteed to women by Roe v. Wade into federal law.

I need you in this fight with me. Please, chip in to support our efforts to overcome dangerous laws enacted by state Republicans and protect our fundamental rights at the federal level. [[link removed]]

The democracy that we love is in danger — but our movement is stronger than whatever extremist Republicans throw at us.

And that’s because we have you.

Thank you,

Chris
