The veto couldn’t come at a more critical time, as 2020 was the most violent year in the 21st century and 2021 is likely to be similar. HB 398 would repeal one of the few gun laws proven to save lives by reducing homicides and suicides. Unfortunately, Black North Carolinians are suffering the most number of homicides. In 2018, Black North Carolinians were 22% of the NC population yet experienced 67% of all homicides. These tragedies would occur more frequently without our Pistol Purchase Permitting system.
