Push for fair taxation in the Reconciliation Bill

Early in his administration, President Biden called for an economic recovery plan to restructure our economy to serve the many rather than just the corporate elite and the wealthy few. Political battles are now raging in the House and Senate over the legislation that will—or won’t—do that. We refer to that legislation as the “Reconciliation Bill” (other names include American Jobs and Family Plans, $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill, human infrastructure bill, and Build Back Better Act).

Republicans are dead set against any form of economic justice for We the People, so we need every Democrat in Congress to support the full Reconciliation Bill as proposed by Biden. Corporate America has launched a huge lobbying effort, including TV ads targeting vulnerable Democratic members of Congress, to preserve tax breaks for the rich and powerful and to slash the investments we need to make in children, families, and working people. Unfortunately, a small group of conservative Democrats are siding with them, rather than us.

This week, we’re focusing on the legislation’s fair taxation provisions. We need to tell our Members of Congress, and President Biden himself, to hold the line and fight for the original Made in America Tax Plan.

In addition, because the Supreme Court moved so quickly to obliterate the CDC eviction moratorium, we want to highlight how urgent it is for Congress to act. We also need to urge our MoC to include a CDC authorization provision in the Reconciliation Bill.

Contact your Members of Congress and tell them ([link removed]) : we demand taxation justice in the reconciliation bill!

** End the Filibuster to Protect Reproductive Justice
------------------------------------------------------------

When the Republican supermajority Supreme Court misused its shadow docket last week to let stand a blatantly unconstitutional Texas law restricting access to abortion, Speaker Pelosi decided to bring the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) to the floor for a vote. The WHPA establishes a statutory right for health care providers to provide abortion care, and a corresponding right for their patients to receive care without medically unnecessary limitations and bans that single out abortion and impede access to care. Indivisible SF is an official member of the campaign to promote the WHPA.

The WHPA, which has been introduced in every Congress since 2013, was introduced in both houses of this Congress on June 15, 2021. It has 205 co-sponsors in the House and 47 in the Senate – all of them Democrats, including both of our Senators. But it’s not going to pass the Senate if the filibuster remains in place. So it’s time to do two things:
1. Thank our Representatives for bringing the WHPA to the House floor for a vote (Pelosi) or sponsoring it (Speier)
2. Thank both of our Senators for cosponsoring the WHPA and urge them to end the filibuster so it, and other urgently needed legislation, can become law.

Contact your Members of Congress and tell them ([link removed]) : end the filibuster to protect reproductive justice.

** ONE WEEK REMAINS IN THE RECALL! Vote Now and Vote No!
------------------------------------------------------------
By now, if you were registered to vote at your current address as of Monday, August 30, you should already have received a ballot in your mail. If not, you can still vote (if you’re eligible and live in SF), but you’ll have to vote in person ([link removed]) .

If you do have your ballot, use it! Read our step-by-stepinstructions ([link removed]) on how to vote in the recall election. We’ve included a checklist to avoid common mistakes that might prevent your vote from being counted.

The deadline is coming up fast: just one more week. We need to prevent the right wing from removing our Democratic governor from office, and that means getting our ballots in before the deadline on Tuesday, September 14.

Remember:
* You don’t need a stamp.
* You do need to put your ballot in the return envelope and sign the return envelope.
* You should make a plan now to turn in that stuffed, signed, and sealed return envelope before the deadline.

You can cast your ballot either by mail or by dropping it off at City Hall or your local polling place. If you choose to mail it, we recommend doing that absolutely no later than Monday, September 13 to ensure it gets postmarked in time. If you choose to deliver your ballot in person, check the Department of Elections website ([link removed]) for details on when and where.

Already voted? That’s great! Thank you for being a voter! Now it’s time to spread the word. This election will come down to turnout, which means we need to mobilize as many Democratic voters as possible to stop the recall. One key step is relational organizing: tell all of your friends and family to make a plan to vote. Then join a phone bank, text bank, write postcards, or canvass to reach out to the wider community! Find voter outreach events, as well as all the materials you can share, on our Vote webpage ([link removed]) .
