"New Era" for Painters
The new president of the Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) union, Jimmy Williams Jr., is not only the youngest General President in IUPAT's history, he's the youngest president of any building trades union in the U.S. and the youngest among AFL-CIO affiliates. "We have to recommit our efforts on political action and organizing," Williams said, adding that "we have to become more inclusive. We have to give a voice to our membership that needs to be heard." Williams began his career with the IUPAT in 1998 as a glazier with District Council 21 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before becoming Organizing Director and General Vice President. Incoming General Secretary-Treasurer Gregg Smith is a 4th generation painter and 29-year member of the union. [link removed] Read more here.
