FAMILIES BELONG TOGETHER

========================

Re-sending in case you missed this -- the response has been incredible!

John — overnight the restart of the Remain in Mexico policy has forced desperate parents and children into a nightmare situation.

Thousands who were on the cusp of safety are now trapped in a tent city with no drinkable water, where chickenpox, COVID and gastrointestinal issues are already commonplace. And all of this pales in comparison to the biggest threat: kidnap, extortion, and even torture by cartels.

None of this is a surprise. These hellish conditions are why President Biden campaigned on ending the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico policy. But so far we’re just not seeing the urgency that’s needed to end this nightmare and replace it with a process that treats people with dignity, compassion, and basic safety.

We can’t let the Remain in Mexico policy continue even a day longer, so i n the last few days Families Belong Together has dramatically ramped up our advocacy with the highest levels of the Biden administration, coordinated with groups across the country, and built a huge grassroots outcry. It’s an unexpected but crucial escalation of our work, and I need to ask for your support to keep it up:

It’s not just Remain in Mexico where our broken immigration system is completely failing. Even for families from Afghanistan where in the last few weeks seemingly the entire U.S. government has stepped in to live up to our moral obligation to provide support, we’re *still* housing families in military bases with disgraceful records of neglecting migrant children. But sadly that commitment is the exception, not the norm.

Since assuming office, President Biden has continued a Trump-era policy, Title 42, that bars families from entering the country under the pretense that it’ll keep us safe from COVID, knowing fully-well that will trap even more families in deadly and dangerous situations.

There is absolutely no good reason this across-the-board cruelty needs to continue. Our country and government is completely capable of restoring U.S. asylum protections and ensuring the safety and welfare of unaccompanied children.

Families Belong Together has been leading a huge cross-movement Welcome with Dignity campaign to advocate for a just immigration system, push our country to modernize the immigration system to ensure fair laws, and uphold treaty commitments to protect refugees and advocate for foreign policies that address the reasons people flee their home countries. And we have been forced to dramatically ramp up, which is why I need to ask:
