Hi friend -- Wanted to make sure you saw Renee’s note about holding the gun industry accountable. The issue is simple: Gun manufacturers shouldn’t enjoy legal immunity while their products fuel deadly violence at home and abroad.

If you haven’t already, please take a minute to read the whole story and contribute today to support our work holding the gun industry accountable.

Subject: Holding gun makers accountable

Hi John,

For years, an obscure federal law has made it virtually impossible to hold the gun industry accountable for the harm caused by the deadly weapons they make and sell. That means that the gun industry has been allowed to rake in profits with no consequences, as tens of thousands of people are killed and hundreds of thousands more are wounded by guns in the U.S. every year.

Donate today to fund our fight to hold the gun industry accountable!

Now, the gun industry’s immunity could finally be coming to an end. The Mexican government has filed a lawsuit against 10 U.S. gun manufacturers, arguing that they have knowingly facilitated the sale of firearms to drug cartels in the country. Official estimates suggest that somewhere between 70 and 90 percent of the firearms recovered in Mexico originated in the U.S. It is not hard to understand how the American gun industry has fueled skyrocketing violence in Mexico.

Gun manufacturers should not be able to enjoy legal immunity while their products fuel deadly violence at home and abroad. Contribute today to help support our campaign to hold the gun industry accountable.

The lawsuit from the Mexican government comes after another potential blow to gun industry immunity. Families of some of the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy filed a lawsuit alleging that the marketing materials of Remington, the maker of the gun used by the Sandy Hook shooter, encouraged lone-wolf type shooters. That case cleared several initial hurdles and Remington offered a multi-million dollar settlement to the families, a sign of how seriously the gun maker takes the threat of these lawsuits.

We have the opportunity to make lasting changes that can help hold gun makers accountable. We can’t let it pass us by. Please, contribute today to invest in this fight for a safer and more just future.
