Dear John,
As you saw, last week five ultraconservative Supreme Court justices essentially overruled Roe v. Wade in Texas by eliminating Texans’ full constitutional right to abortion and reproductive health care after six weeks. The law, known as SB8, also deputizes anti-abortion extremists to bring lawsuits allowing them to collect public bounties against anyone that “aids and abets” any person seeking an abortion. As a result, 85 to 90% of abortions performed in Texas are now illegal.
This is the culmination of a forty-year campaign by Rightwing extremists to overturn Roe, and all but guarantees that similar laws will be passed in other Republican-led states. Like many of you, we are devastated for the Texans who want and need an abortion and are most impacted by this horrific decision.
But we are also ready to fight, and we need you to fight with us. First, we must restore balance to this lawless, out of control Court by adding new justices. Then we must defend our rights at every turn – in state houses, the halls of Congress, and at the ballot box.
Here are three actions you can take today: Call your Representative and demand they sign on to the Judiciary Act of 2021, which would add four seats to the Supreme Court, and the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would invalidate SB 8. Abortion access is on the ballot in federal and state elections – from the Senators who confirm federal judges to the very state court judges who could enforce countless abortion restrictions across the country. Make sure you vote the entire ballot and elect people who will protect abortion access. Sign up for updates on supreme court races in your state. Donate to AFJ Action to help us hold Senators accountable that voted to confirm judges and justices with records committed to overturning Roe v. Wade. You can find a full description of our efforts here. For forty years AFJ Action Campaign and our affiliate Alliance for Justice have demanded our federal courts protect our rights, and we have taken on every attempt to dismantle them. Thank you for joining us in action today. Onward, Outreach Director |
