John,
Earlier today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB1 into law -- a sweeping voter suppression bill that rewrites the state’s elections code and puts up new barriers to voting, disproportionately impacting voters of color, young voters, and voters with disabilities.
Now more than ever, we know that we need federal legislation to combat the hundreds of egregious voter suppression bills being introduced and passed across the country. While Texas is the latest state to put voter suppression into law and follows states like Arizona, Georgia, and Florida, it won’t be the last. And that’s why we need you with us in this fight now.
We’re working in communities around the country to register voters and activate volunteers to reach out to Congress and urge them to pass federal voting rights legislation. The only thing that can stop voter suppression in its tracks is the passage of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act -- and we need your support to get there.
This Texas law now serves as a blueprint for state legislatures across the country as they continue to work to suppress the votes of their constituents. We expect to see more legislation like this become law unless we do everything in our power to stop it.
We cannot let anything stand in the way of our sacred right to vote. This is an extremely dangerous time for democracy, but with your help, we will ramp up our advocacy and mobilization efforts to protect the right to vote for every voter. Join us and chip in $15 now >>
Thanks for standing with us,
Laura
