Project Chimps has already begun the process of transferring over 220 chimps from the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), a facility that maintains the largest population of privately-owned chimpanzees in the nation. There are still 150 chimps at NIRC—moving them is dependent upon construction of additional facilities. Project Chimps plans to build three new habitats, which will include unique features and structures that promote autonomy and free movement. But they need funding.
