Dear Friend,

Rather than following through on their commitments to work with the City Council and people of Minneapolis in good faith, the Mayor, his police federation, and their special-interest allies have been maneuvering to keep the grassroots-led Yes 4 Minneapolis amendment - which would expand our public safety system to include life-affirming first responders - tied up in process traps for as long as possible.

They believe sowing confusion, fear, and doubt is their path to re-election — for Mayor Frey, as well as our racist, outdated and broken policing system. This morning, as a result of this fear-mongering, a judge ordered that City Council once again rewrite the Question 2 ballot language.

We believe the people of Minneapolis will ultimately side with Attorney General Ellison, Rep. Omar, and the overwhelming chorus of Minneapolis leaders and elected officials who agree: we can do better on public safety by voting Yes on 2.

The Council is holding an emergency meeting today at 1:30 p.m. Call your City Council member now. Tell them to stand up to special-interest fear-mongering by supporting fair, clean language on the ballot.

Here’s what you can say when you call:

"Hello, my name is _____ and I'm a Minneapolis resident. I'm calling to ask you to reaffirm your commitment to uphold fair and clean ballot language for the public safety charter amendment. Voters like me deserve to have our voices heard on unbiased ballot language that accurately and fairly represents the charter amendment. Thank you for your work to protect our democracy.”

The people of Minneapolis are united for change. We proved it earlier this summer when more than 20,000 of us signed the Yes 4 Minneapolis People’s Petition to change the city charter so we can expand our police-only public safety model to include community-based expert first responders, like mental health professionals, social workers, and violence interrupters.

But Mayor Frey’s allies, who have opposed the amendment all along, are now making a last-minute attempt to stop it from getting on the ballot. Time is running out. The City Council has to make a decision immediately - and they need to hear from you.

Call now. Tell your Council member to uphold clean, fair language on the public safety ballot initiative, and let the people decide the future of public safety.

In solidarity,
Amanda Otero, Deputy Director
