John,
With the news out of Texas last week, reproductive rights are on the minds of many across our country. This isn't a new fight for Diana; this is an issue she has been working hard on for her whole career.
Earlier this year, Diana took action against the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prevents federal funds from being used to cover abortions.
It was put in place after Roe v. Wade to appease the anti-abortion movement and politicians. It's a compromise to the disadvantage of those already marginalized in the health system -- mainly Black, Indigenous, Latinx, poor, and LGBTQ+ folks.
Hyde forces many pregnant people to make the impossible choice -- carry an unwanted pregnancy to term or pay for an abortion and risk basic needs going unmet.
As the Chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice caucus, Diana has been fighting against Hyde for years. Thanks to her advocacy, Hyde doesn't appear in any federal spending bills this year for the first time in decades. But between all the red tape, arbitrary waiting periods, and clinic closures nationwide, and last week's failure by the Supreme Court to stop Texas' violent six-week abortion ban, we have to remain vigilant.
It's more important than ever to put an end to the repressive Hyde amendment once and for all. If you believe that everyone -- not just those who can pay out of pocket -- deserves abortion access, sign on now.
REPEAL THE HYDE AMENDMENT >> [link removed]
Abortions are as medically necessary as getting medicine when you're sick or a cast if you've broken a bone. But, nearly 1 in 4 poor women carry unwanted pregnancies to term.
As we reckon with centuries of racial inequality and attempt to build an America where all have the opportunity to succeed, we can no longer accept that abortion is legal only for the people who can afford it. We need to get rid of this heinous restriction that has limited abortion access for far too long.
Diana believes that nothing -- not race, zip code, class, gender identity, or the state you live in -- should limit your ability to get an abortion. Join her in demanding the unjust and repressive Hyde Amendment be repealed. Sign on NOW
