For our grassroots movement, Labor Day is much more than a single day out of the year.
That’s because our movement is rooted in the Dignity of ALL Work -- whether you punch a clock or swipe a badge, whether you’re raising children or caring for an aging parent, no matter who you are, where you live, or what kind of work you do.
We finally have a president who understands that, and a government that’s putting workers -- not corporations -- at the center of our economy and our trade policy.
That’s why we passed the American Rescue Plan, putting stimulus checks in folks’ bank accounts, delivering the biggest tax cut for working families ever with the expanded Child Tax Credit, and saving a million workers’ pensions -- one of the best days of my career.
It’s why Senate Democrats advanced the massive bipartisan infrastructure plan to put American workers in good jobs fixing our roads and bridges -- jobs that can’t be shipped overseas. And we passed it with the strongest Buy America protections, ever, to make sure American tax dollars support American workers.
But our work is not finished. For too many Americans, hard work still doesn't pay off like it should.
Our fight is not over until every American is paid the living wage they've earned. Until everyone can afford health care and child care and a secure retirement. Until everyone has power over their schedules and their careers and their lives. Until everyone can find a good job in their hometown.
To do that -- to empower all workers -- we must continue our fight to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, to protect workers’ right to join a union and their ability to fight for stronger wages, benefits, and working conditions.
I want to take today to thank workers in Ohio and across the country -- especially our essential workers, people who don't have the day off today. I’m committed, today and every day, to fighting for you. And as a valued member of our grassroots movement, I know you are committed to the Dignity of Work, too.
With gratitude,
Sherrod
