John,
Throughout this pandemic, each of us saw the compassion and determination of Chicago’s workers on full display. Every day, from Hegewisch to Rogers Park to Austin, workers across Chicago went above and beyond to serve their neighbors and keep our city moving.
The resilience of Chicago’s workers should not be a surprise to any of us. For decades, they have been on the frontlines of the fight for economic, social, and racial justice. You can thank them for the 8-hour workday—and even Labor Day itself.
As someone who grew up in a union family, I know our city is strongest when our working families are strong. That’s why the labor movement will always have a partner in my administration.
Over the past two years, we worked with organized labor to increase our minimum wage to $15 and implement the most robust scheduling requirements for workers in the nation. We also passed the Right to Return Ordinance to ensure union hotel workers laid off during the pandemic have a chance to get their old jobs back.
And our work is nowhere near done. My administration will continue working closely with the labor movement to make Chicago the most supportive city in the nation for working people.
To all of Chicago, happy Labor Day.
And to all of Chicago’s workers, thank you for the work you do each and every day.
In solidarity,
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
