It's Labor Day -- and today is always about celebrating union workers in the Smith house. A reminder of gratitude we owe them for their service and sacrifice.

I'm a proud former union member and leader. When I went to community college, I worked on campus to help pay for my tuition. I joined the classified employees' union -- California Schools Employee Association Chapter 725 -- later becoming president. I even negotiated our contract when I was still in my 20s.

Working folks have always delivered for us -- and now, they deserve a government that will fight for them during the greatest economic crisis in a century. The best way to improve the quality of life and vibrancy of our communities is to provide a supportive and equitable environment for job and career creation.

With so many working families struggling to make ends meet, it has been made abundantly clear that building an economy that works for everyone must be a priority, even as we continue to fight COVID-19. Unions are leading this fight even to this day.

Everyone deserves a job that pays a living wage. Everyone deserves a secure retirement. Everyone deserves a workplace that is safe. And we'll never stop fighting until that's a reality.
