Happy Labor Day, John!
Today we take time to honor the hardworking people who harnessed the power of collective bargaining to improve working conditions for people all across this country. Without the tireless efforts of the labor movement, we wouldn't have the 40-hour workweek, anti-discrimination laws, the minimum wage, Social Security, overtime pay, and so much more.
Growing up as the daughter of a unionized public school teacher, I saw the power of collective bargaining first-hand from my mother. As a child, I watched my mother join with her union to negotiate increased school funding, smaller class sizes, and improved benefits. Her union helped create not only better working conditions for my mother -- but better learning opportunities for her students as well.
I am so grateful for what the labor movement has accomplished for workers here in Washington State and across the country, but there is still work to be done. That's why I was proud to co-sponsor and help pass the PRO Act in the House earlier this year to protect the right to organize, and I'll continue to always fight for workers' rights.
So today, please join me in honoring the accomplishments of the working people of the labor movement, and tomorrow, let's get back to work fighting alongside them for a better future.
Thank you,
Kim
