John, happy Labor Day.

Today is a day of rest, gratitude to all who fought for our rights as workers, and a celebration of workers and working families, who are the backbone of our nation.

Last year, 14.3 million workers were represented by unions -- only 10.8% of our workforce -- that's a huge decline in my own lifetime. And I’ve seen first hand the detrimental effects it has had. When I get to Congress I will work to strengthen the labor movement and protect the bargaining power of workers.

Because here in Long Island, unions have made us stronger. Unions have protected our first responders. They protected our educators as the pandemic completely changed how our schools run.

And while today, many of us will be at barbecues and family events, let’s reflect on everyone who fought for us to have an 8 hour workday, 2 days of weekend rest, and benefits that help workers live and retire with dignity.

I hope everyone has a good holiday,
