Friend,
Happy Labor Day! Many folks have the day off from work and school today, but it is important to remember that today is about so much more than that. Labor Day is an opportunity to say thank you to the Labor movement and all who fought hard for the eight-hour workday, weekends, overtime, safer workplaces, Social Security, Medicare, and so much more.
We must also pledge to have workers' backs. The past year and a half have reminded us just how essential our essential workers are -- and how critical workplace protections are for the health and safety of our workers. Without them, we couldn't have kept our hospitals, grocery stores, sanitation facilities, and so many other services up and running.
With that in mind, we must fight for working people. I'm proud to be a co-sponsor of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, and I'm fighting in Congress for a higher national minimum wage, paid family leave, stronger support for those in the care economy, and expanded affordable health care access.
I'm also proud to show solidarity with the Washington State Labor Council and all workers – whether they work in homecare or childcare, doing construction or building airplanes, at the port, a state agency, the shipyard, or the post office, in a classroom, a grocery store, or someplace else. We should have the backs of workers.
I'm not done fighting for an economy that works for all of us and protects the rights of our workers. This Labor Day, I hope you'll join me in committing to this fight.
It's an honor to represent you,
Derek
