** Why do we observe Labor Day?
------------------------------------------------------------
Because of hard working women and men like we are seeing on the ground today! I want to give thanks from the bottom of my heart to all of the workers who keep this city running, especially our city employees and others who have been working around the clock to help us recover from Hurricane Ida.
The incredible work you've done in the past week is a reminder of how important you all are to our community, and of why it's so important to continue to fight for equal pay, a living wage, and workers' rights.
I'm working towards the long-term interests of workers by fighting for equal pay, higher wages, and workers' rights. In my first term ([link removed]) , I instituted the Ban the Box policy to ban criminal record questions on job applications, raised the minimum wage for city workers, created a generational economic mobility plan, and more. These are the kinds of policies I will continue to pursue when re-elected.
They are also the reasons that I've been endorsed by unions like the AFL-CIO, UNITE HERE Local 23, and United Teachers of New Orleans.
Let there never be any doubt: my support for unions and workers will not waver. Workers are the backbone of our city. They deserve all of our thanks and support.
Sincerely,
Mayor LaToya Cantrell
