Labor Day was created to commemorate the protests and strikes held by industrial workers in the 19th Century, demanding that their rights be recognized and protected. This Labor Day, workers’ rights are under attack.
Every day we hear about corporations openly union-busting and retaliating against working people without consequence, and this June, the U.S. Supreme Court released a disastrous anti-labor ruling that makes it significantly harder for union organizers to reach workers. And then there’s the anti-worker positions of far-right candidates like Larry Elder, currently in the running for California’s governor, who actively oppose worker protections like the minimum wage.
We need to pass the PRO Act, the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression.
The PRO Act will empower workers to form unions and bargain over wages and work conditions, hold corporations accountable for union-busting, and repeal “right to work” laws, which were created during the Jim Crow era to divide Black and white workers.
Strong unions mean higher wages, safer working conditions, and dignity for all people who work. After our labor laws have been eroded by the courts and weakened by anti-worker legislators, and a global pandemic upended worker norms for every industry, passing the PRO Act is more crucial than ever.
