Happy Labor Day! I hope you and your family are enjoying a well-deserved day of rest. If you’re spending the day as one of the millions of essential workers keeping our country running, thank you for your service.

Growing up, I learned about the importance of worker power from my dad, a union ironworker. Throughout his life, he fought to make sure workers like him would have the protections and compensation they deserve -- and he taught me to do the same.

After working with dangerous chemicals during his ironworking days, my dad developed lung cancer, even though he’d never smoked a day in his life. Dad’s illness and death serves as a reminder that without robust protections for workers, even those who do the right thing can suffer.

I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished for workers since I joined the Senate. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, we’ve extended and expanded unemployment benefits, provided assistance with health insurance premiums, and equipped OSHA with additional funding to keep workers healthy and safe from COVID-19.

This year we also increased the Child Tax Credit, providing the largest child tax credit ever and supporting the most working families ever. We instituted automatic monthly payments for nearly all working families -- which translates to a little more help for families in their monthly budgets.

Let me be very clear: without President Biden and our Democratic majorities in Congress, none of this would have happened. It’s why we must do everything we can to protect our Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate next year.

I am proud to stand up and fight for workers and their families here in New Mexico and across the country, and I will continue to work every single day to build an economy that works for all of us.
