Dear John,

Many of us take for granted the rights we've gained through the labor movement. The weekend, Social Security, workplace protections -- all of these seem normal to many of us. But the truth is, it wasn't always this way.

Until the 19th century, there were few -- if any -- protections for workers. Folks were forced to work in unsafe conditions for little pay until labor unions came together and collectively bargained for better working conditions.

That's what Labor Day is all about. This isn't just a long weekend at the end of summer. It is a day to celebrate how far we've come and honor those who've led the fight.

This Labor Day, I hope you'll join me in saying thank you to the labor movement and all who fought hard for workplace protections, Social Security, weekends, and more.
