Happy Labor Day, friend!
While some of us enjoy a day off work and the final days of summer, it's important to remember what Labor Day is all about.
From Black women poultry workers in Center, Texas, who changed the entire poultry industry when they organized for better working conditions in 1953 to the United Packinghouse Workers of America leading the fight against housing discrimination in Chicago in the 50s and 60s, our country wouldn't be where it is today without labor unions.
America's unions have helped secure necessary improvements, including the 40-hour workweek, child labor laws, the minimum wage, and more.
Right now, unions are fighting on behalf of frontline health care workers (many of whom are Black women!) for safer working conditions, paid sick leave, proper personal protective equipment, and decent wages.
Unions aren't a thing of the past -- they are America's future. Our labor unions help build power. Today and every day, we are standing in solidarity with the countless Black workers fighting for racial justice and economic equality in the workplace.
Onward,
Stefanie
