Today is not just a holiday, John.
Labor Day is a day to reflect on all the ways the labor movement's victories have made our country a better, safer place.
I grew up in a working-class family in a working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia. My own dad had a secure job at Quaker Storage Company, where he was a proud member of the Teamsters. He worked the same Union-protected job for 30 years; my grandmother was in a garment workers union, and my mom, while not a union member, had a safer workplace because of unions.
Early labor organizers -- including countless Black and Brown workers -- secured revolutionary improvements that many of us take for granted today, like the 40-hour workweek, 8-hour workday, breaks, workplace standards, and weekends.
These victories were hard-fought and necessary, but the movement to defend workers' rights is far from over. Just this year, collective bargaining has been under attack by big corporations like Nabisco and more. The frontline workers who have kept our nation afloat during the pandemic are organizing to secure the personal protective equipment, hazard pay, and paid sick leave that will keep us all safe. Workers on the frontlines are still being exploited to this day, so we can't give up the fight.
We all owe labor organizers a tremendous degree of gratitude. And as a co-sponsor of the PRO Act, I'm showing solidarity by fighting to deliver union workers the rights, pay, and respect they deserve.
Our country's rich history of organized labor shows us that our voices are more powerful collectively than individually, and we all must fight to make our country a better, safer place. This Labor Day, sign on now to extend your gratitude to our siblings in labor.
