In Texas, where the highest positions in statewide government are held by Republican candidates, five prominent officeholders ([link removed]) accounted for 57 percent of all state-level Republican fundraising between January 1, 2021, and June 30, 2021. By contrast, donations to the top five Democratic candidates represented just two percent of all Democratic campaign donations.
In the ongoing conversation about how money and power are enmeshed, parsing out donations made during non-election years offers an interesting glimpse into just how much money flows to those already in power.
