In Colombia, peace is a journey

The conflict in Colombia has left deep scars, and lasting peace is more of a journey than a destination. The one thing that remains constant in this journey is the power and perseverance of women forging peace against all odds, defending human rights every day. Through projects funded by the Government of Sweden and Norway, UN Women has accompanied Colombian women in this journey.

Olena Halkanova fled her home in the city of Pervomaisk after the start of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Now living on the contact line between government-controlled and non-government-controlled areas of Luhansk region, she has become a community mobilizer after UN Women-led training.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is on a joint visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 15 to 19 October, together with the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö. This will be the Executive Director’s first official country visit to Ethiopia, and the first official visit to Africa for President Niinistö.

The dire consequences of these have been unequivocally demonstrated in the past decades, affecting economies, societies, cultures, and the global environment and climate.
