Friends,
A major case is heading to the Supreme Court in the fight for equal access to federal benefits for the U.S. territories. It could have huge impacts for us here in the Virgin Islands.
Jose Luis Vaello Madero, who was previously receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits when he was a resident of New York, has fought all the way to the Supreme Court because those benefits were taken away when he moved to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. People receiving SSI are some of the most needy Americans - often the blind, disabled, or those with special needs.
This case highlights the glaring second-class treatment we receive as U.S. citizens living in one of the territories and will directly challenge the racist Insular Cases from the early 1900s that have left us in a perpetual state of colonialism.
Stacey has successfully passed an amendment, which if made law, will bar the Department of Justice from defending these very cases that are being used to deny the Virgin Islands and other territories Social Security and Medicare. We need to keep this fight going!
Will you please chip in to Stacey's Truth & Justice Fund so she can continue leading the fight for equal access to federal benefits for ALL Americans?
