As you likely know, on Wednesday, a draconian and dangerous anti-abortion bill went into effect in Texas. I’ve been so grateful to see so many of you give what you can to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas to aid Texas-based organizations during this time.

As a woman in a state controlled by Republicans, I’ve been terrified by this week’s news. After the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling not to block the Texas law from going into effect, Republicans have been emboldened to pass copycat bills in state legislatures across the country.

Here in Georgia, anti-abortion activists have their next day in Federal Court later this month, in their continued appeal of a District Court ruling blocking HB481, Georgia’s 2019 “Heartbeat Bill,” which was very similar to the new Texas law. The new precedent set by the Supreme Court is dangerous for American women.

Here in our district, my far-right 2022 re-election opponent Jake Evans is cheering on Texas’s lawmakers, and has made it clear he wants to see the Georgia abortion ban take effect, no matter the harm it will cause to people across the state.

These Texas and Georgia state laws put Roe v. Wade in grave danger, John. And we know that laws like these will primarily impact low-income folks. Once again, Republicans are targeting the most vulnerable among us.

While this Supreme Court ruling is intensely disappointing to all of us and endangers women - we must take up the mantle, organize, and fight for the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions. When I head back to Washington, I am ready to do everything I can to make sure Congress codifies Roe v. Wade, making it the law of the land in every state. I won’t back down in this fight, and I hope you’ll join me.
