You are likely aware by now that Texas has passed legislation making abortion illegal after six weeks. To put that in perspective, most people do not know that they are pregnant at all by six weeks. This legislation will only serve to drive thousands into the shadows, and force them to seek unsafe abortions. Make no mistake, the court has functionally overturned Roe in the middle of the night.
I am completely horrified by these developments, and by the Supreme Court’s 5 - 4 decision to allow the bill to go forth. But I know that despairing is not the answer — because right now, many Texans are looking to us to help guide the way forward.
We must also find more permanent solutions to Republicans’ ceaseless attacks on Roe v. Wade. I am pleased that the House of Representatives will vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act — legislation that will secure the right to an abortion and protect abortion providers — later this month. Codifying access to abortion on the federal level will make reproductive rights less vulnerable to the whims of the conservative-majority Supreme Court.
On the state level, I am working on making New York as safe a haven for reproductive health services as possible. The right to get an abortion was codified in 2019 with the passage of the Reproductive Health Act. This is, of course, a good thing, but certifying the right to get an abortion isn’t the same thing as making sure that each and every New Yorker is able to access abortion services.
That’s why I proposed Senate Bill S758, legislation that would give New Yorkers the option to make a gift to a statewide abortion fund via their tax forms. This money would cover the costs for procedures, transportation, and other associated expenses for individuals who are unable to afford abortions on their own.
I promise to continue my work to protect access to abortion on the state level, but I remain deeply concerned about the recently passed legislation in Texas.
Thank you, in advance, for your support. We can never, ever go back to the days before Roe v. Wade, and I will fight like hell to make sure that abortion remains safe, legal, and accessible in New York State.
