One of the main reasons I decided to run for Congress was that I didn’t see enough people in power dealing with the issues facing my generation. That’s also why I decided to talk to CNN about my experience freezing my eggs.

When I talk to folks, it’s clear that many young women and prospective parents are considering this option. And yet, discussions of fertility are stigmatized, so that often people feel like there is only one way to have a family and that we have to make decisions about family planning alone. So I decided to have an open and honest conversation about making this decision for myself and what the process has been.

Freezing my eggs was a significant personal decision and one that I did not make lightly. I am grateful to live in a time where I do not have to choose between having a family and having a career, as so many prospective parents before me had to do. As well as being a personal issue for millions of families across our country, fertility and family planning are also crucial policy issues. As a member of Congress, I am committed to making building a family accessible to everyone, regardless of what that family may look like.
