We are excited to share that we recently launched #GetHerOnEllen, a social initiative aimed at raising awareness for LGBTQI2S seniors facing discrimination, heightened rates of social isolation, and a fear of being forced back into the closet.

#GetHerOnEllen aims to shed light on these often overlooked issues by helping Michelle DuBarry (AKA Russell Alldread), one of the world’s oldest performing drag queens and an icon in the LGBTQI2S community, realize her dream of meeting the queen of daytime tv; Ellen Degeneres.

Michelle is one of millions of seniors who are struggling with the multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination that come with being an older and ageing LGBTQI2S person. Due to their sexual orientation and gender identity, LGBTQI2S seniors face unique challenges across the board.

In fact, recent statistics compiled from Egale Canada on LGBTQI2S seniors found that:

  • 52% of LGBTQI2S seniors fear being forced back into the closet in residential care
  • 53% of older LGBTQI2S seniors feel isolated
  • 40% of LGBTQI2S seniors have not disclosed their sexual orientation or gender identity to their primary healthcare provider because of the fear of discrimination

At the age of 88 (born in 1931), Michelle has continually found ways to contribute to and uplift the LGBTQI2S community around her, despite these challenges. So, Egale is calling on others to help give back to Michelle and catch Ellen’s eye by sharing her story on Twitter and other social media platforms using the hashtag #GetHerOnEllen.

Sincerely,

Helen Kennedy
