In light of Hurricane Ida’s devastating impact on our state and the surrounding areas, I’d like to talk about the necessity of immediate action on climate change. But first, and most importantly, I want to know that you’re doing alright.

Last Wednesday, New York and New Jersey saw a record-breaking amount of rainfall. New York City, specifically, saw more rain in a single hour than ever before in the history of weather records, which date back to the 1800s.

Let’s be clear: natural disasters like these are part of a larger trend caused by climate change. Decades of inaction from our leaders have made it so that some amount of devastation from climate change is inevitable — but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t fight to prevent the worst from coming.

To do that, we’ll need to pass comprehensive legislation that focuses primarily on decarbonizing our economy as soon as possible.

Additionally, we need to fortify our state’s aging infrastructure to meet the demands created by climate change. During the hurricane:

• Subway service went out completely, leaving thousands of New Yorkers stranded
• Governor Hochul warned that it might not be possible for first responders to rescue individuals stuck in their cars if those cars began to float due to flooding
• Many New Yorkers saw their homes flood, and several individuals lost their lives because they became trapped in basement apartments

We can raise the revenue to overhaul infrastructure in our state if we raise taxes on billionaires and multimillionaires — and with Democrats controlling all levels of state government, we absolutely have the political control to do this.

What remains to be seen is whether or not we have the willpower to meet this moment. I promise to do everything I can to advance comprehensive climate legislation in our state.
