Moments after I arrived in Cleveland yesterday, an incredibly frustrating news alert popped up on my phone:
Let me be very clear: There is no time to "pause." We are demanding change now.
The package that Senator Joe Manchin refuses to support would invest millions of dollars in America’s crumbling infrastructure. Just think of the impact those resources would have right here in Cleveland, which was recently named the poorest city in the entire United States.
This is why we need progressive representatives in Congress now. If Congress is unable to pass the reconciliation package, we will lose a huge opportunity to pass key legislation. Vulnerable families and communities will bear the brunt of this loss.
The Child Tax Credit that has already saved three million children from falling below the poverty line is at stake. Expanding educational opportunity through universal Pre-K is at stake. Meeting the climate crisis with urgency through clean energy and technology investment is at stake. Lowering health care costs with Medicare expansion is at stake.
This isn’t a small list, but one senator can upend everything that advocates, progressive lawmakers, and families have been fighting for.
Look, Senator Manchin is a corporate-backed politician who doesn’t understand the urgency of voting YES on a widely-supported, reconciliation package.
But I do, John. Send me to the U.S. Senate, and I will be the deciding YES vote on essential proposals like this one.
And not only that — I’ll be the deciding YES vote on other urgent changes that we desperately need, like guaranteeing voting rights for Black people and abolishing the filibuster.
