John, what passed in Texas this week is cruel, extreme, and unconstitutional.
On Wednesday night, the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the country went into effect in Texas -- essentially outlawing abortion after 6 weeks (before most women know they're pregnant), with no exception for rape or incest.
Even more heinous is that the law effectively deputizes local citizens to enforce it, providing a $10,000 bounty to anyone who can successfully win a case against someone suspected of aiding an abortion, even the ride-share driver who brought someone to the clinic.
To make matters worse, the conservative-majority Supreme Court remained silent as the right to a safe, legal abortion -- as protected under the landmark Roe V. Wade decision -- was stripped away overnight. When the Court's decision was finally released, they refused to block this draconian law -- with little explanation to justify it.
We must be clear: SCOTUS is endangering the health and safety of millions of women and providers by failing to intervene and uphold Roe -- and we need to act now.
Laws like these are meant to undermine a woman's right to make her own health decisions.
Whether a patient follows through with or terminates a pregnancy is complex, highly personal, and ultimately, a health care decision. It should not be threatened by invasive laws created by extremist lawmakers, many of whom will never become pregnant themselves.
And what's frightening is that due to the Supreme Court's failure to stop this Texas law, GOP lawmakers around the country will be emboldened to continue and escalate their assault on women's rights in their attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
