Dear John,
This Wednesday, the Supreme Court refused to block a Texas law that bans abortions two weeks after a missed period, which is before most people know they’re pregnant. This six-week ban effectively criminalizes all abortion care in the state. It also authorizes private citizens to act as bounty hunters and enforce the law by suing anyone who provides assistance to a person seeking abortion care after six weeks.
This law isn’t just an attack on the rights of pregnant people—it’s blatantly unconstitutional, violating fifty years of precedent and the principles established by the landmark decision Roe v. Wade in 1973. What’s more, the Supreme Court made this decision without a full briefing, oral argument, or hearing.
