The history of the American worker is a story older than America itself, John xxxxxx.
It's a plot rooted in chattel slavery and deep gender bias, the rebellious spirit of freed people seeking access and advancement, and the ingenuity of our small business owners and inventors.
From 1619 to the present, our workforce has evolved, yet many patterns from previous eras remain prevalent today. During the Industrial Age, so-called titans created wealth for their children's children while the people whose time and sweat equity made their products went home with pennies.
And today, not much has changed, which is why I'm also thinking about the American families who woke up this morning without enough income to pay their bills, put food on the table, or stash a few dollars for tomorrow.
Honoring the spirit of this holiday, and doing our jobs as members of Congress, means advancing policies that eliminate these systemic workforce oppressions. But for some reason, there's always a resistance to these changes. Someone consistently interjects whenever equal pay, paid family leave or raising the minimum wage enters the chat.
Building back better means protecting and growing the middle class and recognizing the service of our essential workers. And as we do that, we remain focused on creating a care economy that will provide sustainable salaries with lasting benefits and safe environments for every American worker.
John xxxxxx, we still have some work to do, that much is clear. But in the meantime, I hope you enjoy this weekend. If you have the time, take a moment to reflect on the path laid by our ancestors as we work to make this union more perfect for every one of us.
Keep the faith,
Hakeem
