Dear John,
Scientists issued a ‘code-red’ warning for the planet last month, sounding the alarm that the climate crisis is widespread, rapid, and intensifying. According to the newest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, without immediate, large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to 1.5℃ by 2040, or even 2050, will be out of reach. Still, the report also offers some hope. If we can get to zero global emissions, we can prevent future warming. We still have power to construct our future, but we must raise our climate ambitions even higher.
That’s why, this week, Ceres launched a new initiative to tackle the climate crisis and meet the urgency of the moment by working to decarbonize 6 of the highest-emitting sectors—which together are responsible for up to 80% of global emissions. |
The Ceres Ambition 2030
initiative focuses on the banking, electric power, food, oil and gas, steel, and transportation sectors. This new initiative will use guidance from the global sector strategies from Climate Action 100+, the world's largest investor engagement initiative on climate change, which will be released throughout the fall.
In July, Ceres launched our food sector strategy, the Ceres Food Emissions 50. Ceres is engaging with the highest emitting publicly traded food and agriculture companies in North America to improve GHG emissions disclosures, set ambitious emission reduction targets, and implement credible climate transition plans to help get us to a zero emissions economy. |
If we can get to zero global emissions, we can prevent future warming. By building on the decades of work at Ceres, and leveraging the power of investors and other stakeholders, we can help transform these sectors. |
Thank you,
|
