Team,
Despite being the richest country in the world, the United States is one of the most dangerous places to deliver a baby -- and that danger triples if the pregnant woman is Black.
Across communities, age, and income brackets, Black women are disproportionately impacted by this maternal mortality crisis -- and the COVID-19 pandemic has made the issue even worse.
Preventable pregnancy complications prove to be fatal for Black women, especially those from rural and underserved communities like so many in Alabama.
We must make childbirth safe for Black women in this country by expanding access to maternal healthcare. That’s why I’m asking you to sign on to this petition in favor of passing the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act. Will you add your name below?
As a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, this issue hits close to home -- which is why I introduced the Maternal Vaccination Act. This bill provides funding that makes investments in Black mothers and babies by increasing awareness and access to maternal vaccinations.
This legislation is desperately needed -- especially because Alabama ranks third highest in the nation in maternal death rates.
For so many in this country, the miracle of childbirth turns into a tragedy. I’m taking action to tackle the different barriers facing Black motherhood, and I need your support. Will you add your name below and back the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act?
Thank you,
Terri Sewell
