John,
Read below for an exciting update on last Saturday's nationwide mobilization to pass the For the People Act. But first, can you take the next step by signing up for a phonebanking shift to call voters in key Senate states?
Common Cause activists like you have spent the Senate’s recess speaking up and taking action around the country. With your help, we are sending an unmistakable message: our democracy depends on passing the For the People Act.
And this past Saturday, on the 58th anniversary of the March on Washington, we and our partners helped organize over a hundred events across the country, including in key Senate states like Arizona, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Nevada, and more.
In the nation’s capital, thousands of people marched for miles through the streets to demand that every senator fight for the boldest possible bills to ensure everyone has access to the ballot and fair representation. Our own Marilyn Carpinteyro (see picture above) rallied the crowd along with Martin Luther King III, Alicia Garza, and dozens of civil rights leaders.
In Phoenix, AZ, we took hundreds of photos of activists demanding passage of the For the People Act while voting rights advocates and groups like the Maricopa County NAACP lined up outside of a church and spoke with voters, played music, and gathered with the community to demand action.
In New Hampshire, activists waved signs in front of Sen. Maggie Hassan’s office in downtown Manchester, calling on the New Hampshire senator to back her support of the For the People Act with action to fix the filibuster.
In Nevada, we worked with incredible local partners to organize a rally featuring City Council members, community activists, and poets from Spotlight Poetry outside the federal courthouse in downtown Las Vegas to urge passage of voting rights bills in the U.S. Senate.
All of this incredible work in target states is compounded by the advocacy of thousands of volunteers just like you - who have called, postcarded and texted millions of voters in these states to tens of thousands of direct calls to the target Senators from their constituents. But we can’t stop now.
As I write to you, senators are continuing their negotiations on an updated democracy reform package. Your voice is critical in ensuring we send the strongest possible bill to President Biden’s desk.
Want to be a part of this historic mobilization to save and strengthen our democracy? One of the biggest ways you can make a difference is by volunteering just an hour of your time to call voters in the states that matter most -- and connecting them directly to those senators’ offices to make their voices heard.
These shifts always include training for first-timers before you make calls - so if this is your first time, no worries! We'll make sure you feel prepared before you begin. You can join us by signing up here! There are shifts every single day - choose the ones that work best for you and join our team!
I really hope you can find a few hours this week to help -- because if you do, you'll be making a major difference for our democracy.
Thanks for all you do,
Izzy Bronstein, National Campaigns Director
