John --
Last night, after Trump spread vicious lies about Ilhan Omar on stage, his supporters chanted, “Send her back” as he looked on approvingly.
This is the flashpoint of Trump’s divide-and-conquer-politics — we’ve reached the stage where Ilhan has been “othered” so much to his supporters that they’re willing to call for the deportation of a sitting Congresswoman and naturalized US citizen.
This is the insidious reality of Trump’s strategy — Ilhan Omar has fought harder to help the very same people chanting “send her back” than Donald Trump ever has.
From Medicare for All to a Green New Deal, her platform does far more to benefit poor and working people of this country than Trump’s flagrant emboldening of an already powerful wealthy elite ever will.
So Trump — devoid of ideas and real solutions — uses the only tactic he has to convince his supporters that Ilhan is the enemy: brazen racism. Yet Ilhan, a refugee who chose this country and worked her way into the halls of Congress, has far more in common with hard-working Americans than Donald Trump, the billionaire trust fund kid who has never faced a consequence in his life.
Remember, decency cannot be taken for granted. It is something we must strive for, defend, and embolden in our political system. Donald Trump is the antithesis of a working-class democracy, and because of that we must defeat him, and everything he stands for.
