Team,
When I joined the thousands of women who ran for office in 2018, it was in no small part because of how tired we were of seeing groups of men sitting around deciding on health policies that impact women. When people ask why it’s so important for Democrats to keep the majority in the House and Senate, it’s because - unfortunately - I can’t trust Republicans in Washington to have my or my daughters’ backs.
The right to an abortion has always been a few justices away from being overturned, and that reality has been realized as the Supreme Court failed to protect Roe v. Wade last night.
Team, I’m asking for you to add your voice to the thousands of us who are outraged. Please take a moment to sign my petition calling for the protection of reproductive rights so I can bring as much support as I can to my work in Congress.
The Texas law that went into effect yesterday is as heinous as it is radical. It bans abortion before most women know they’re pregnant - with no exceptions in cases of rape or incest. It also empowers vigilantes to bring lawsuits against providers or anyone found to “aid or abet” abortions, effectively criminalizing a woman’s choice over her own body. Even worse, anyone who successfully sues could be awarded at least $10,000.
I’m often asked about women’s equality in this country. We can’t even begin to have that conversation if women don’t have the same autonomy men are afforded over their own bodies. True equality can only be achieved by electing more pro-choice women so that we can enact legislation like the Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine into law reproductive health care for all women across America.
The path we’re headed down is a dark one, which is why I need you to join with thousands of other Americans united in the fight for women’s rights. Will you add your name?
Thank you for standing with me,
— Lori Trahan
