John,
Every day, I marvel at the opportunity to impact the public discussion. Thank you for helping put me in this position!
I've been building the progressive movement across the country for nearly two decades. But organizing groundbreaking projects, writing dozens of articles, speaking at hundreds of events, and building entire organizations didn't give me as many chances to shift the public debate as you have, by supporting my campaign to represent San Francisco in Washington.
My work organizing campaigns for civil and human rights at the local, state, and national level has offered remarkable opportunities. I wrote portions of the nation's leading local civil rights law in Providence, RI in 2017, before advocating for the nation's first ban on municipal face surveillance, here in San Francisco earlier this year.
Can you help me continue advocating for your rights in Congress?
When we marched together to stop Bush's wars, I didn't envision ever running for Congress.
When we advocated across the country for the rights of consenting adults to marry the partner of their choice, never did I anticipate representing San Francisco in Washington.
When we reclaimed public space together with Occupy SF, it never occurred to me that I could one day help bring the movement's voice inside the policymaking process.
And when we joined hands at the Women's March to repudiate our tacky, gross, and criminal president, I didn't plan to challenge Speaker Pelosi. I had hoped she would do the job that we put her in a position to do by working tirelessly to recapture the House.
But watching Pelosi protect institutions, and disregard your rights, forced my hand. I got into the 2018 race because our voice in Washington abandoned human rights, immigrant rights, privacy, checks & balances, and climate justice. Today, it grows ever more clear that Speaker Pelosi's primary commitment is to defending the most conservative Democrats in the House, not to expressing San Francisco's visionary voice.
Do you want to see our city's values proudly championed in Washington?
Unlike President Trump and Speaker Pelosi, I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth.
I'm an immigrant to the United States. Our family lost our home when I was 16 years old.
It astounds me every day that our campaign is poised to end the bipartisan consensus on corporate rule. But universal single-payer healthcare, the Green New Deal, and ending mass incarceration are ideas whose time has come.
And with the support of over 6,000 donors from every state in the Union, and hundreds of volunteers from every part of San Francisco and the broader Bay Area, I'm increasingly confident that our movement can not be stopped.
Make a campaign contribution today to help us bring a voice to Congress representing all of our communities, instead of just the 1%.
