GROUNDWORK ACTION ALERT
This has been a horrifying week for those of us committed to reproductive justice and every person’s right to bodily autonomy. Last night the Supreme Court refused to block the most restrictive abortion measure in the nation – SB8 out of Texas.
Abortion is health care and every woman and pregnant person has a constitutional right to make their own choices about their own reproductive health.
But the Texas law bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a timeline that is well before most folks even realize they are pregnant. There are no exceptions for rape or incest. And it allows private citizens to sue those “aiding and abetting” abortion in any way.
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor stated it best in her written dissent: “In effect, the Texas legislature has deputized the state’s citizens as bounty hunters, offering them cash prizes for civilly prosecuting their neighbors’ medical procedures.”
This is no one off. It’s part of a decades-long conservative strategy to dismantle Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court is already slated to hear a formal challenge to Roe later this fall, which originated in Groundwork’s partner state of Mississippi. So we can’t back down. Groundwork is sharing credible actions and organizations you can support to help push back in Texas and beyond. Check out our Twitter thread and we will continue to share more resources as they come forward.
When you’re mad, scared, or feeling defeated, it usually helps to take action. And right now, Texans and other people vulnerable to this regressive trend in abortion law need us to act.
