Howdy Comrades!
The Houston DSA Newsletter is on the Edge of (issue) 17, and spooky season is fully upon us! I'm Stephen Adkison, Houston DSA's Communications Secretary, and I want to thank you for reading this and for doing all the work that I write about.
Since this is such a great way to stay updated on the vast things that our chapter does, I think you should share the subscription link with a friend, and bring them out to anything we do!
Without further ado, here is issue 17 of the Houston DSA newsletter!

Child Watch Meeting: Right After Education Working Group
|
Childcare is often prohibitively expensive for working families. This can prevent them from participating in meetings and events Houston DSA puts on, even if they are interested. By providing a child watch program in a way that is beneficial to both the watchers and children, we are better able to see to the needs of our community and allow more working people to participate in the political process. In addition, child watch can be part of the education process for the next generation of socialists.
For these reasons and more, such as the priority resolution passed at the National Convention, Houston DSA is committed to providing a quality child watch system! Immediately after the next Education Working Group Meeting, which is from 6-7 tomorrow, October 21 at Bohemeo's, from 7-9 we will be having a Child Watch meeting. We'll be talking about the work that we have already done, what needs to get done, and our overall visions for the program.
If you want to volunteer or contribute in any way, and especially if you are a parent, guardian, or caregiver and have suggestions or advice, I urge you to come to this important meeting! For all the reasons stated above, it is vital we get rolling on this! Hope to see y'all there!

State and Local Special Meeting Location and Time
|
In lieu of the normal meeting, on Wednesday, October 23, State & Local will be attending Texas Signal’s candidate forum of the Democratic primary candidates for U.S. Senate.
The event is from 6:30–8pm at the Regal Edwards Greenway theater. Tickets are free but you have to register here.
After the event, from 8–9pm, we’ll gather to discuss what we just saw!

Last Monday, the Reading Group finished their discussion of The People's Republic of Walmart. While I unfortunately was not able to attend, I've been told over and over that the discussion was phenomenal and the book itself is great if anyone wants to read it on their own. Next reading group, the week of Halloween, they're discussing...monsters? Stay tuned for further updates.
On Wednesday, the Medicare for All Working group met to discuss their past efforts and campaigns, assessing the responses and effectiveness. They also discussed how they should direct their efforts in the future. Keep an eye out, and I recommend coming out to any canvasses our chapter holds. They are great opportunities to learn new skills, meet people, and do the work of building our movement!
