Yesterday, I appealed the morally and legally bankrupt deal that grants the Sackler family — who owned and ran the Oxycontin manufacturer Purdue Pharma — a lifetime legal shield in the battle to hold them and Purdue accountable for their role in the opioid crisis.
Billionaires should not get to play by a different set of rules than the rest of us. Washington families devastated by the opioid epidemic deserve better.
We cannot allow the wealthy to buy a legal shield that protects them from facing real accountability in a court of law — while still walking away as billionaires. It’s wrong — and it’s never going to change if we don’t challenge this unjust result.
The opioid crisis robs thousands of Washingtonians of their lives every year and devastates families across our state.
Over the course of this case, the families of Purdue Pharma’s victims submitted letters describing the impact of the opioid epidemic in their lives. One widow, Stephanie Lubinski, wrote, “I believe the Sackler family should know what their greed has caused.” I agree with her.
