John,
In light of brutal new restrictions on women’s access to healthcare in Texas, it’s clearer than ever that Republicans have no loyalty to the principles of liberty and individual choice. The GOP is attempting to make women's private and entirely personal medical decisions not only a government matter, but subject to vigilante justice by giving abusers who commit sexual assault power over victims. This cannot stand.
Governor DeSantis has already made his intentions clear by previously signing onto a request to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that guarantees tens of millions of Americans basic control over their personal medical decisions. Texas’ law is a tragedy for the millions of Texans who now face impossible choices about their reproductive health. Now DeSantis and his Republican cronies want to bring Texas’ anti-choice laws to Florida. Well, I say HELL no!
This isn't a vague threat. Let’s take a minute to understand what Florida Republicans really want to do: They want to give rapists the right to sue their victims to stop them from getting an abortion - and to be able to collect money from their victims who try to have an abortion. If Republicans get their way, rapists will have more power over this decision than the victim.
I will keep fighting against these cruel laws until every American is guaranteed the dignity and respect of making healthcare decisions without interference from extreme anti-choice ideologues. We cannot allow Florida to go down the path of Texas and move forward with what is essentially a bill of rights for rapists. I hope you can join me in this fight.
Yours in the fight, Annette Taddeo
